Building Safety Levy comes into force today: watch our essential briefing

The Building Safety Levy comes into force today, 1st October 2026, introducing important new requirements for qualifying residential developments.

Developers, designers and project teams will need to understand not only how the levy is calculated, but also what information must be supplied, when it is required and how the process fits alongside planning and building control applications.

To help teams prepare, Steven Cooper of Salus has delivered a concise presentation explaining the key elements of the new levy.

What does the presentation cover?

Steven provides an overview of:

  • Which developments and applications may be affected
  • The relevant thresholds for residential developments and purpose-built student accommodation
  • How the levy relates to planning and building control
  • The information applicants will need to provide
  • When information must be submitted
  • Exemptions and developments that may not attract a charge
  • How the levy could affect project costs, completion and occupation

The levy is more than an additional figure to include within a cost plan. It introduces a new administrative process requiring accurate and consistent information from the beginning of a project.

Missing or incomplete information could result in an application or initial notice being rejected. Failure to pay the levy could also prevent a building control body from issuing the final certificate.

The presentation is accompanied by a separate expert question-and-answer session addressing some of the practical scenarios facing the industry.
