Salus is providing building control support for the extension of the Matt Hampson Foundation’s Get Busy Living Centre near Melton Mowbray.

The extension will provide additional gym and rehabilitation space, together with a new social area for the Foundation’s beneficiaries and their families.

For Salus, the project continues a relationship that began with the construction of the original Centre. Paul Meadows and Stuart Power were involved in Salus’ building control work on that building, which opened in 2017.

Supporting the Foundation’s work

The Matt Hampson Foundation supports young people who have experienced life-changing injuries through sport.

Its Get Busy Living Centre provides access to rehabilitation, physiotherapy, personal training and wellbeing services. It also gives beneficiaries and their families a place where they can meet others facing similar challenges.

The original project transformed the site of a former aircraft hangar into a purpose-built, accessible rehabilitation facility. Salus worked alongside a large team of businesses and construction professionals to help deliver the building.

With demand for the Foundation’s services continuing to grow, the new extension will create more space for rehabilitation and for people to spend time together at the Centre.

Salus’ role in the extension

Joint CEO Stuart Power has carried out the plan check for the extension, reviewing the submitted design information against the relevant requirements of the Building Regulations.

Registered Building Inspector Barry Brookes is carrying out inspections at key stages while work progresses on site. These visits allow building control matters to be discussed with the project team during construction.

Having worked on the original Centre, the Salus team is pleased to be involved again and to see the facilities being expanded.

A team effort

The wider project team includes Rockwell, Willmott Dixon and Nick Preedy, who project-managed the original building.

They are working alongside Derry Building Services, L Reynolds, architects TP Bennett, Ruth Campbell & Co, Indigo Fitness, Cundall Fire Ltd, Safer Sphere, Salus and Burrough Court Estate.

Many of those involved also contributed to the original building.

Writing in the Foundation’s latest newsletter, CEO Tommy Cawston said:

“We have been talking about this project for a while, so it is great to see its progress. It is also rewarding to see multiple partners all doing their best to bring it together. A lot of them were involved in the original build and we’re extremely thankful for their support.”

The project also has personal significance for Salus Head of People and Culture Sarah Cleobury through her family’s connection with the Matt Hampson Foundation.

“My partner, Liam, comes from a rugby family. His father, two uncles and grandad all played for Leicester Tigers, and his grandad played for England and was president of Leicester Tigers and the Rugby Football Union. They know Matt personally, as well as Roy Jackson, their long-serving former Chairman of Trustees who has now become their Honorary Life President, so it is lovely to see Salus involved in the extension and supporting the work they do.”

Everyone at Salus is pleased to see the extension taking shape. Once complete, it will give the Foundation more room to provide rehabilitation, practical help and ongoing support to its beneficiaries and their families.
