New Fire Safety Laws in Force
17/10/06

New legislation aimed at reducing the risk of death, personal
injury and damage to property from fire in non-domestic premises
came in to force on 1st October 2006. The Regulatory Reform
(Fire Safety) Order affects not only businesses, but charities
and voluntary organisations too. Self-employed people who use
premises separate from their home for business activities are
also included.
The order covers general fire prevention and fire safety duties
to protect personnel in case a fire does break out.
Director Stuart Power, a qualified Fire Engineer, said: "Each
organisation must appoint a responsible person or persons to
carry out a fire risk assessment.
It should identify potential hazards, such as inflammable substances
and pay special attention to people at particular risk such
as the elderly or disabled.
If five or more are employed, significant findings of the assessment
must be recorded and addressed. Salus have qualified fire safety
experts with the competence necessary to produce these assessments
and advise on the complex area of fire safety legislation in
buildings."
